Oregon Steelhead Fishing
Guided Steelhead Fishing Trips

Guided steelhead fishing trips in Oregon and Washington. Steelhead fishing - fisheries - summer steelhead - winter steelhead

In this content, you will find where we fish for steelhead during certain times of the year in the Pacific Northwest. There are a number of techniques to use fishing for these hard fighting fish. We fish for steelhead in the Cowlitz river, Lewis river, Kalama river, Clackamas river, Siletz river, Sandy and Santiam rivers, the Wilson river, trask river, Nestucca River and Alsea river.

Steelhead in Oregon and Washington are some of the best prized game fish in the world. Summer steelhead start running in May and run through September. Winter steelhead start in December and run through March. Both of these fisheries are great fishing for both free drifting in tee-shirt weather and for wearing rain gear in the winter.

Lewis River Steelhead!

Most Steelhead average 8 to 10 pounds, but it is not uncommon to hook into a big 18 to 20 pound fish. In some of these rivers we fish, there are steelhead reaching the 30 pound class like in the Lewis river, Kalama river, Cowlitz river, Wilson river, Trask river and the Nestuca river. ALL native steelhead must be released except in several of the Olympic Pennisula area. So check the game regulations to make sure what is legal. There are some rivers where you can keep one native steelhead per year.

Fishing for summer steelhead, we like to use our special bait that we put up for these hard fighting fish. (See www.curemasters.com) When using this bait, we drift down the river with the current at the same speed so the bait has a natural presentation. This is called "free drifting" and is one of the best techniques for steelhead fishing. When fishing for winter steelhead, we use this same technique, but with more lead because of th water volume. Other techniques used include a diver and bait. This is also a very productive way to fish for steelhead. We use a jetdiver with a 6 foot leader back to a spin-glo and sandshrimp. This works great for winter steelhead. Catching summer steelhead and winter steelhead is a very technical sport, so it's very important to be on the river in the right place at the right time with the right water conditions to be able to catch a beautiful chrome bright steelhead. So, for these reasons, it's a very good idea to go with someone that knows the rivers well or hire a guide if you wish to have a great success fishing for steelhead. The Columbia River Fishing Guide knows how to catch these fish, so if you're interested in these hard fighting fish, let us know and you will have a fishing trip of a lifetime.
